Secondary Use of Healthcare Data

Utilization of Health Data: The BENEFIT junior research group at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf is a research team funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), actively participating in the German Medical Informatics Initiative (MII) and the Smith Consortium. The research focus lies in exploring previously untapped potentials of patient data to advance medical research and development.

After careful consideration of ethical, legal, and social aspects (ELSI), we identify flagship projects, bring together data requesters and data owners, and support the technical implementation through the use of informatics tools. The focus extends beyond existing data sources, placing special emphasis on outlining pathways for future data inquiries.

Our efforts revolve around close collaboration with the industry to integrate open data standards and clinical knowledge. This underscores our practical approach with the aim of advancing medical research and sustainably improving patient care.

The BmBF-funded group is embedded in the German Medical Informatics Initiative and part of the Smith Consortium .
